Case Study Format

The planning committee of the 4th International Service-Learning Summit seeks diverse service-learning and civic engagement case studies for distribution, discussion, and practice at the 2016 Summit.

Participants will engage case studies focused on effective practice and challenges in reciprocal engagement and community partnership.  Cases should focus on identified, effective local practice which might include innovative approaches to training, work plans, support, joint planning, co-evaluation or building effective reciprocal partnerships, or examples of lessons learned. Cases should also surface challenges for discussion.

Case studies should follow the format below and be submitted by January 30, 2016. Case study examples from the 3rd ISL Summit are available here. Proposals may be submitted here.

Focus (Please select one category)

  • Domestic examples of global learning and cooperative development partnerships
  • Effective practices in host communities (i.e., volunteer internship placement, homestay networks/vetting, orientation for students, homestay families, in-country staff and NGO supervisors, etc.)
  • Flipped or collaborative cultural sensitivity/competency training
  • Flipped or collaborative approaches to global citizenship development, global activism, or global solidarity-building
  • Community-based research or research on global engagement
  • Effective collaborations to jointly assess learning and community development outcomes
  • Community-driven pedagogy, co-creation of global learning efforts, joint program planning, and effective community partnerships

We realize that the above categories overlap within programs. However, for the purposes of this exercise, we hope to have a focused discussion on specific best practices and challenges.

In no more than 200 words, please indicate how you conceptualize “community partner” in terms of this partnership or these partnerships specifically, and how you ensure community voice and feedback throughout your programming:

Clarifying Question: Considerable research has demonstrated the clear harms that may come to vulnerable children and medical patients through global engagement partnerships. In no more than 200 words, please indicate whether vulnerable populations are involved in the partnership(s) discussed here and, if so, what clear steps are taken to protect and empower those populations.
